My name is Sydney Weaver, and I have the privilege of joining the amazing team at CCA as the Volunteer Coordinator. I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve the students and community partners of CCA.
During the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to work with Cornerstone through their kids summer program. This experience exposed me to how the ministry of Cornerstone and CCA was creating transformation in their community as well as the lives of many individuals in the community. I absolutely loved what was happening in South Dallas through Cornerstone, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it long term. After finishing my degree in Family and Human Services from John Brown University in December of 2016, the Lord called me back to Dallas and now to CCA!
I have been coming regularly to CCA since October, and this time in the life of the school has honestly been quite challenging. However, despite the challenges and emergencies that we may face here, being at CCA and being a part of the CCA family has truly been a breath of fresh air.
CCA is a haven of life in the South Dallas community. Living in a world that is constantly feeding our students and their peers negative messages and telling them that they will not be successful or be able to break the destructive cycles that may be occurring in their neighborhood or families, CCA does the complete opposite. CCA harnesses the potential of each student and reminds them that they can do great things despite their past experiences or current circumstances.
When discussing how they came to CCA, several students have told me about friends, family members, or even former teachers that told them that they would never be able to finish high school or earn their high school diploma. When students are told this over and over again, they begin to believe it and give up on themselves and their goals. At CCA, the students are constantly being reminded of their potential. They are given resources and tools to succeed and reach their goals.
While academic success is clearly highly encouraged and valued, the true purpose and goal of CCA is to show students the love Jesus Christ. With any interaction with the school or staff, it is obvious to both students and guests that the true heart of CCA is that the students will have a deep and meaningful relationship with the Lord. This is such an encouraging environment to be adopted in to.
By witnessing the staff and volunteers pouring into the students with such dedication, I am encouraged in my own walk in the Lord. Listening to them take small and large things to the Lord through prayer pushes my own prayer life. I leave every day encouraged by the work the Lord is doing through the school. I am so proud to be a part of an organization that is creating lasting change in the name of the Lord!
CCA truly is a special place, and I am excited to see what the Lord has in store for us!
